Clinton County Illinois Marriages
Book 1A
Dec 1857 – about Sep 1867
(plus a few other isolated dates)
As usual, spelling was retained as we interpreted it from the original registers, so be sure to check for alternate and phonetic spellings, along with the usual transposition difficulties.
Two marriage books were maintained during this time frame: Marriage Book 1A covers only half the marriages; Book 2 (covering the years 1856 – 1873) will be transcribed next. Perhaps the officiates cleaned out desk drawers, perhaps people brought their licenses in to get them recorded long after the fact, or perhaps the county clerk had two books so two customers could be assisted at one time. Both books have the same officiates and cover the same general time frame.
Marriage Book 1A has several peculiarities. For example, months might be skipped, then an entry might be made from 20 years back, then the next entry might move forward a couple of months.
Marriage Book 1A is a copy of the original marriage certificates, all written in the County Clerk’s handwriting. This database contains all the information shown on the certificates except for the County Clerk’s name. There is no parent, or place of birth, or age information. The original certificate book is at the Courthouse in Carlyle, County Clerk’s office. You may request a copy from there (cost $2), or you may request a copy from the IRAD (possibly at no charge). Microfilm may be ordered through any of the Church of Jesus Christ Later Days Saints’ Family History Centers, Microfilm # 1007041. One copy of the microfilm is at the O’Fallon, Illinois FHC indefinitely.
One clue for the location of these marriages might be found in the "Officiates of Marriages".
As always in the genealogy world, the responsibility for correct transcription rests on you, the researcher.
