 VOLUNTEERS WANTED

We want to make an index of our 1930 census names. We'll just concentrate on the name and age for this indexing. This is a perfect project for people far away, also.

 HOW YOU CAN HELP:

  1. Pick one enumeration district (ED) and an alternate from the list below that you would like to index. First one to volunteer for a district will receive that one.
  2. Volunteer by Contacting Us.  Please put 1930 Census in the subject line of your e-mail. Tell us the ED you want to index, and how you might access the census roll/CD needed. If it's a small ED, you may choose two to begin with. Completed ED's will be put online as soon as they are completed and proofed. After you volunteer, we'll send you a template and instructions so that all ED's are similar.

HOW YOU CAN GET ACCESS TO THE CENSUS SHEETS:

  1. Rent the microfilm reel from your favorite company or local Family History Center (but I'm told the FHL does not have the rolls ready for distribution to FHCs yet).
  2. Obtain the microfilm reel on interlibrary loan through your local library (library must have a microfilm reader). Illinois residents can get it free this way.
  3. Purchase the microfilm reel or CD-ROM needed from a commercial company. Heritage Quest  has digital CDs for about $15 or $20 (member/non-member). These digital CDs do not work on Macs. Heritage Quest and National Archives also have film for purchase. You would only need one CD or reel (maybe you can share with someone?).  In general, the commercial company delivers the film quicker. The National Archives takes about 30 days (as of 22 Oct 2002).
  4. Access online images at Ancestry.com. They have quarterly subscriptions available but is the most expensive approach.
  5. A little more involved -- if none of the above work for you, then photocopies will be mailed to you. Let me know if this is your only option-we need your help.

NOTE: At this time each volunteer will have to bear their own expenses without the possibility of reimbursement. However, don't let this keep you from volunteering! Just let the coordinators know what you are able to do--we'll work out the rest.

Other information that will not be transcribed at this time are listed in the instructions that the enumerators were given to record the census.

At this point, we will transcribe into an Excel data base. If you do not have Excel, tell us what worksheet program you do have and we'll convert a template for your program.

After you get the basic ED, date, page number, names and ages transcribed, send it to us. Then if you wish to transcribe another ED, that would be wonderful. If you wish to transcribe the rest of the columns of that ED, we'll send you that template, too. If you will do look-ups for researchers on your ED after the index is on line, let us know.
