Sylvester Goewert Dies Sun. Morning

Sylvester Goewert, age 34 years, died at the home of his wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Voss, in this city, at 3:00 o’clock Sunday morning. Death followed a lingering illness, and for the past year his condition has been quite serious.

Mr. Goewert was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Goewert, and was born and reared in Breese, the date of his birth being November 12, 1915. He attended St. Dominic School here and had been a member of St. Dominic Church when a resident of Breese.

Mr. Goewert was married to Miss Isabelle Voss, in St. Louis, and the first years of the married life were spent in Breese, he being employed at the Mexican American Hat factory. In 1942 they moved to St . Louis and have been residing at 4203a DeSoto Ave., until ten weeks ago when, due to his serious condition, they came to Breese, living with Mr. and Mrs. Voss. While in St. Louis Mr. Goewert had been employed at the Guth Electric Company.

Deceased leaves his wife, a daughter, Marilyn, 14 years old, his mother, Mrs. Kate Goewert of Breese, three brothers, George of Breese and Herman and Charles of St. Louis, and three sisters, Mrs. John Schulte, of this city and Lillian Hauskins and Mrs. Vincent Glaub os St. Louis.

Mr. Goewert belonged to the Perpetual Help Church and Elmer Mareschal American Legion Post in St. Louis.

Funeral services were held in St. Augustine’s Church yesterday morning, Rev. A. Eckert officiating, with interment in St. Dominic Cemetery.

The body was kept at the Bruegge Funeral Home prior to services.

A special Guard of Honor service was sponsored by the Elmer Marshal Memorial Post 459, American Legion of St. Louis. The service was conducted by the Greater St. Louis Guard of Honor, American Legion, at the Bruegge Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, July 11, in memory of Mr. Goewert.

The ceremonies were under the direction of Louis Ottoline, Captain and Walter Bitter, 1st Lieut. Officers serving were Commander Joseph Shephard, Chaplain Thomas Mahoney and Sergeant at Arms Williams. The soloist was Miss Wilma Jesse. Service Guards were Dr. Schalirant, James French and Spacer H. A. Weiss.

The group came from St. Louis in a chartered bus. Many Legionnaires also came in private cars as approximately 50 members of American Legion posts in St. Louis were present.

The services of the Guard of Honor are entirely non-sectarian and was closed with the Catholic benediction by Chaplain Mahoney.

This ceremony, one of the most notable of its kind in Breese, was very impressive to all who witnessed it.
