Leo B. Winkeler, 95, of Bartelso, died Monday, Jan. 23, 1989, after an extended illness at the Carlyle Health Care Center.
Mr. Winkeler was born in Bartelso on March 29, 1893, son of Henry and Johanna (Opkennerth) Winkeler. He married Helena M. Mensing on Feb. 12, 1920 in Bartelso. Mrs. Winkeler died in 1982.
Survivors include three sons, Greg Winkeler of Bartelso, Norbert Winkeler of Carlyle and Ervin Winkeler of Germantown; two daughters, Rosalind Sautman and Lucille Vandeloo, both of Carlyle; 17 grandchildren and 23 great great-grandchildren.
Mr. Winkeler was a retired farmer, a World War I Army veteran and a member of St. Cecilia’s Church in Bartelso and the Catholic Knights and Ladies of Illinois.
Funeral services were held Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Cecilia’s Church with Rev. Gene Bungay, Rev. Melvin Vandeloo and Rev. Church Tuttle officiating. Burial was in St. Cecilia’s Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Cecilia’s Church and will be received at the funeral home.
