Joseph Meyer, 84, former supervisor, died suddenly Tues.

Joseph W. Meyer, 84, former supervisor of Breese Township, died at his home at 515 South Third Street in Breese Tuesday afternoon. His death came quite unexpectedly at 3:15 while seated in a chair where he spent many hours in reading. He had not been well due to emphysema and bronchitis. At the time he suffered the attack his sister-in-law, Miss Catherine Voss, who lived in the home, was with him, and immediately called Rev. F. X. Heiligenstein and a doctor. He had always been up and around and attended church last Sunday.

Mr. Meyer was born in Breese Mar. 19, 1885, a son of Louis and Mary (Krempel) Meyer. He lived in Breese his entire life, residing in his present home since his marriage in 1910. He married Miss Wilhelmina Voss in St. Dominic Church and they lived in the home which Mr. Meyer had completed shortly before their marriage. His wife died in July of 1928.

One child was born to them, namely, Andrew, who lived with his father. He and his late wife made a home for the father in his later years, living with him; however, Andrew’s wife died May 13 of last year. Besides the son, Mr. Meyer leaves a sister, Mrs. Anton Voss of Breese.

Deceased was active in his life. His principal occupation was being an employee at the East Mine, retiring a number of years ago. He served as supervisor of Breese Township from 1935 to 1955, being succeeded by his son, Andrew, who has held the office since. Mr. Meyer had also been a director of the Township Officials of Illinois, and was a member of St. Augustine Church and Holy Name Society.

The body is at the Bruegge-Heyer Funeral home in Breese. Services will be held at St. Augustine’s Church Saturday morning, beginning at 11 o’clock. Interment will be in St. Dominic Cemetery.
