MAN FOUND DEAD IN HOUSE IN OKAW RIVER BOTTOMS

Ben Niehenke Finds Brother Henry, After Latter Had Been Dead Ten Days

About two weeks ago Henry Niehenke was missed by his folks in Bartelso and Germantown and last Sunday his brother, Ben Niehenke went to the little house in the Okaw River bottoms to see if he could find him. The house is located about 4 ½ miles southeast of Bartelso, and as the river had been pretty high down there he had to row in a boat about a mile of the distance to the place where his brother had been “batching”. On his arrival he was unable to find anyone or gain admittance to the house so he kicked in the door. Henry was lying on the floor inside, dead. Ben then returned to Bartelso and called Coroner Timmermann who sent four men to get the body. When the men returned an inquest was held. The boy was in bad state of decomposition and it is thought that he had been dead for a t least ten days. The Coroner’s verdict was that his death was unknown. He was a veteran of the World War and while in service was gassed and shell-shocked. It is thought that his death was the result of the gas or shock. He had been suffering quite a bit since his return from France. He served overseas about a year. His age was 35 years.

Funeral services were held in Germantown Monday.
