JOSEPH ENGLEHARDT DIES AT ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL MONDAY

Injuries Received in Fall of Coal at East Mine October 6th Result in Death

Joseph Englehardt of this city died at St. Joseph’s Hospital Monday morning at 7 o’clock. He was 61 years of age. His death resulted from injuries received at the East Mine on October 6th. Mr. Englehardt had just started work that morning when a large piece of coal broke loose, covering all of his person except his head, breaking both his legs besides injuring him internally. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital and it was thought for a time that he would recover. A change for the worse was noticed about five days before his death.

Mr. Englehardt was born in St. Louis, Mo., on February 9th, 1862 and came with his parents to Breese when he was five years old. He attended school here in Breese and later started working in the mines. He was married on August 3, 1886 to Miss Clara Riemenschnieder.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Henry Hoelscher and Mrs. Elmer Lehman and nine grandchildren, all of this city and one brother, John Englehardt.

Funeral services were held Thursday at the home at 2:00 p.m. and from St. John’s Evangelical Church at 2:15 p.m., Reverend Hoefer officiating. Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery.

A large number of miners from the Local attended the services in a body to pay their last respects to their friend and fellow worker.
