Wm. Deien Dies of Heart Attack at Brother's Home

William Deien, who was better known at "Dick", died unexpectedly at the home of his brother, George H. Deien here Wednesday night of last week.

Mr. Deien, 62, had not been in good health the past ten years, retiring from his work at the East Mine about ten years ago, due to ill health. For the past year he had been attendant at the Rod and Gun Club, north of Breese. Last Sunday, feeling badly, he went to the home of his brother, George, in Breese, and Wednesday evening about eight o'clock while watching television, he became quite ill, and expired an hour later. A heart attack was attributed as being the cause of his sudden death.

Mr. Deien spent his entire life in Breese. He was born here September 9, 1896, a son of Lorenz and Elizabeth (Timmermann) Deien. He married Miss Pauline Thien, who died March 21, 1948. During the years 1949 to 1955 he lived with his daughter, Florence and her husband Clarence Beckmann, at Centralia.

Besides Mrs. Beckmann, he also leaves a son, Elmer Deien, of this city, two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Fonke of St. Louis, and Mrs. Loretta Maxfield of Lebanon, three brothers, Henry and George Deien of Breese and Frank Deien of Germantown and seven grandchildren.

A son, Robert, age 16, was killed by lightning in 1941.

Mr. Deien was a member of St. Augustine's Church and an honorary member of the Breese Volunteer Fire Department.

The funeral was held from the Bruegge-Heyer Funeral home Saturday morning, with services in St. Augustine's Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Heiligenstein. Burial was in St. Dominic Cemetery.
