Virginia Lee Barter
Virginia Lee Barter was born July 31, 1917, in Keenes, Wayne County, the only child of Hassie and Adam Warren. She grew up in Carbondale, lived most of her life in southern Illinois and was raised partly in Carlyle Aunt Flo and Uncle, Dr. William O. Warren. She also graduated from Carlyle High School.
Barter lived in Harrisburg for more than 40 years, 30 of them married to the late H.H. “Sam” Barter. Virginia was a valuable asset to her husband’s business, Barter Enterprises, which employed many people over the years.
Barter is survived by two nieces, Susan (Dr. John) Goehner of Scottsdale, Ariz. and their daughter, Tina (Jeff) Critchfield-Huber and grandson, Holden Huber of Paradise Valley, Ariz; the Rev. Dr. Rachel Berry (the Rev. John Kraps) of Harrisburg; and their children, Imy Berry, John M. Kraps II and Rachel Rebecca Berry. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Hazel Thomas of Melbourne, Fla. and daughters, Sally (Donald) Snow of Clearwater, Fla. and children Shannan and Shelly and Susie (Stanley) Forbes of Melbourne; and daughter, Jackie.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Virginia Barter Performing Arts Scholarship at Southeastern Illinois College.
