Marvin M. Guthrie, 92

Marvin M. Guthrie, 92, of Carlyle died Wednesday, July 21st, 2004, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

He was born Oct. 16th, 1911, in Carlyle, the son of Homer and Iverne Reynolds Guthrie. On Nov. 11th, 1945, he married Mildred Cruth in Carlyle, and she preceded him in death Jan. 9th, 1999.

Surviving are two daughters, Donna Rolfingsmeyer of Carlyle and Joyce Claypool of Coulterville; a son, Richard Guthrie of Carlyle; and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He worked for Carlyle Paper Mill and retired as a custodian for Carlyle Unit School District. He also operated Guthrie’s Grocery for 30 years. He was a master sergeant in the U. S. Army Air Corps and his unit received a presidential citation during WWII.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carlyle, a lifetime member of the VFW and also belonged to the American Legion Post 1227 in Beckemeyer and the American Federation of State and Municipal Employees. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing.

A funeral service was held Saturday, July 24th, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Carlyle, with Pastor Rob Ellard officiating.

Burial followed in Carlyle Cemetery with military honors provided by the Beckemeyer American Legion.

Visitation was at Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle.
