Minerva N. Milne, 90

Minerva N. Milne, 90, of Altamont, and formerly of Effingham, died Saturday, Nov. 6th, 2004, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

She was born April 12th, 1914, in Carter County, Okla., the daughter of Pezzie and Evie Skaggs, and the preceded her in death. On Aug. 15th, 1933, in Walters, Okla., she married Raymond C. Smith, and he preceded her in death Dec. 15th, 1946. She then married George Milne on Dec. 20th, 1962, and he preceded her in death Oct. 8th, 1969.

Surviving is a son, Raymond Charles Smith of Pleasant Grove, Ala.; two daughters, Mary Schmitt of Keyesport and Berta Curry of Effingham; a stepson, John Milne of Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; and a sister, Jimmy Ann Stapp of Savoy.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Dale Smith; a brother, Murl Skaggs; and a sister, Geneva Williams.

She attended Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha, Okla. She raised her children while working as unit secretary and bookkeeper for the Brownstown School District. She then worked in the accounting department at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia for four years.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Kinmundy, and also attended the First Christian Church, Effingham. She was a past Matron, Order of the Eastern Star, Farina, St. Anthony’s Hospital Auxiliary, RSVP, and was involved in charity work all her life.

According to her wishes, her remains have been donated to Washington University Medical School for anatomical research. No visitation or funeral service was held. A private family celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
