Wayne Burkhardt, 79

Wayne A. Burkhardt, 79, of Beckemeyer died Saturday, Sept. 18th, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Carlyle on Nov. 16th, 1924, the son of Henry and Estelle Jones Burkhardt. He married Mary Meadows on March 22nd, 1953, in Pinkneyville, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 11th, 2002.

Surviving are five daughters, Barbara Romack of South Elgin, Mary Katherine Bolton of Beckemeyer, Linda Manhardt of Commerce, Ga., Ruth Ann Atchinson of Highland and Diana Lynn Whisnant of Madison, Fla.; three sons, Wilford Louis, William and Michael Burkhardt, all of Beckemeyer; and 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Burkhardt; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Wilford B. and William B. Burkhardt.

He retired from American Steel in Granite City and prior to that worked at the Beckemeyer Smelter for 15 years and the General Motors Plant in St. Louis.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 21st, at 11 a.m. at Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle.

Burial was in Carlyle Cemetery.
