Charles Edward “Red” Long, Sr., 94
Charles Edward “Red” Long, Sr., 94, of Foxes Grove in Wood River and formerly of Bethalto, died Sunday, Sept. 19th, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
He was born Sept. 14th, 1910, on the family farm outside of chesterfield, the son of the late Chester A. and Ellen Louise Brannon Long. On Sept. 14th, 1940, in St. Charles, Mo., he married Ruth Marie Kleber, and she preceded him in death in January of 1993.
Surviving is a daughter, Norma Jeen Kawainui of Alton; a son, Charles E. Long, Jr., of Wood River; and five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lindell and Ralph Long; and three sisters, Dorothy Long, Marie Standfield Maze and Addie Belle Morris.
He worked at the Owens-Illinois Glass Works Plant No. 7 in Alton as a journeyman bottle maker on forming “D” shift for 42 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member of the Milton Area Volunteer Fire Department from 1946 until 1960.
He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army and was in the mine detection unit of the Fifth Army, 88th division and served for two years in Italy during WWII.
He was a life member of the Alton V.F.W. Post #1308 as well as a member of the Madison County Fireman’s Association, Glass Bottle Blowers Union-Local 97 and a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto since 1975.
Funeral services were held today, Wednesday, Sept. 22nd, at 1 p.m. at Elias-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory in Bethalto, with Rev. Mark Hofferber officiating.
Burial was in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military rites by Alton V.F.W. Post #1308 Ritual Team.
