Mrs. Mary Von Bokel Dies At Hospital
Complications and Stroke Fatal to Mother of Mrs. Ben Deters and John Von Bokel of Carlyle.
Mrs. Mary Von Bokel, wife of John Von Bokel, well known near Breese farmer, and mother of Mrs. Ben Deters and of John Von Bokel, Carlyle, passed away in the St. Joseph Hospital in Breese at one o'clock last Saturday afternoon, following a three months illness from complications. Her age was 68 years, three months and 16 days. Present at her bedside for the six hours preceding her death was all of her nine living children. A paralytic stroke shortly before death added to the complications of gallstones, liver enlargement and dropsy which had necessitated her return to the hospital after two weeks spent at home following a month's treatment at the hospital.
Made Own Funeral Arrangements.
As her long illness drew to a close, she realized her condition and made her own funeral arrangements. Rev. Fathers Kaup, Holthaus, and Eppmann officiated at the solemn requiem high mass at the St. Dominic's Church in Breese at nine o'clock Tuesday morning. Interment was made in the St. Dominic's Cemetery. Mrs. Von Bokel was born in Ankum, Germany, June 3, 1868, a daughter of John Herman Kluemke and wife. Her mother died when she was quite small. With two older sisters she came to the United States and Clinton County when she was 18 years of age. In 1890 she was united in marriage with John Von Bokel, near Breese farmer. The wedding solemnized by the late Rev. Father Reinecke, occurred in the same church from which she was buried, of which she was a faithful member all of her adult life and of whose Ladies' Sodality she was a member from the of her marriage until her death.
Mother of Ten Children.
Her life was spent in hard work and family service on the home farm, two miles northwest of Breese. Four of her children still reside at home. Surviving are her husband, John Von Bokel, Sr., nine children, 19 grandchildren, and one sister. The children are: Marie, wife of County Judge Ben Deters of Carlyle; Elizabeth, Mrs. Vic Klutho of Breese; Ben Von Bokel, of Aviston; Theodore Von Bokel, at home; John Von Bokel, Jr., Carlyle garageman; Gus Von Bokel, of Breese; Alois Von Bokel, at home; Miss Regina Von Bokel, at home and and Miss Alvina Von Bokel, at home. Her youngest son, George died Sept. 26, 1925 at the age of 15 years. The sister if Mrs. Ben Welling of Aviston. The Carlyle Union Banner joins in mourning the passing of Mrs. Von Bokel and in extending sincere sympathy to her bereaved.
