Lewis L Backs, Fatally Injured

Lewis L BACKS ,43,was fatally injured Friday afternoon while working in the woods for Fred SMITH. He was loading logs on a truck when two logs split and one fell on him. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese where the doctor's examination revealed his back was broken, his ribs crushed, and internal injuries. He passed away at the 1:45 p.m. on Saturday August 15 in the hospital.

Mr. Backs was born at Lake Township, Clinton County, Il January 24,1910, a son of Lewis A. Backs and Nerva Ellen STEIN. He was united in marriage March 10,1944 to Lucille SHACKLEE . His occupation was a sawmill worker.

Besides his widow he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Lewis A Backs, and two sisters, Mrs Joseph PORZUKOWIAK, Beckemeyer and Mrs. John GRAYLING of Posey.

Funeral services were held August 18 from the Frerker Funeral Home with Rev Paul OTT conducting the services. Interment was in the Carlyle Cemetery.
