Louis A. BACKS a resident of the community for the past 56 years, passed away at his home in Carlyle, Monday morning at 10:45 after being in ill health for the past four years. He had followed the occupation of farming until his retirement. He reached the age of 77 years,11 months and 23 days.

Mr. Backs was born in New Minden , June 26,1872 , the son of the late Andrew and Lena BRINKMAN Backs. He was united in marriage to the former Ellen STEIN, who survives. Born to this union were five children. Three daughters survive him, Mrs John GRAYLING, Carlyle, Louis Lorraine Backs, Gordon Prairie and Mrs. Joseph PORZUKOWIAK, Beckemeyer. A daughter Mrs. Clara LAKE and another daughter who died in infancy proceeded him in death.

He and Mrs. Backs reared John Backs from infancy. Also surviving are 12 grand children,15 great grandchildren, two brothers, Robert Backs of Belleville, and William Backs of Centralia and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth VOLTMAN, St. Louis, Mrs. Martha WINKER, Belleville and Mrs. Millie DUEKER of Centralia, Il

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Messiah Lutheran Church, Rev Fred HARTMAN officiating. Burial will be in the Carlyle Cemetery.
