Joseph Knies, 85
Former Breese resident Joseph H. Knies died at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville on Sunday, Nov. 1st, 1998. He was 85 years old.
Born in Breese on March 26th, 1913, he was a son of Henry and Mary Nieman Knies. On Oct. 19th, 1937, in Breese, he married Amanda Hartlage. She died June 15th, 1986.
Survivors include two daughters, Gerry Gehrs of Belleville and Phyllis Grotts of Mokena; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vincent Knies of St. Louis and Edward Knies of Edwardsville and one sister, Martha Pulliam of Edwardsville. He was preceded in death by a son Thomas Knies and sister, Aurelia.
A retired business manager of Laborers and Hodcarriers Local 581, he was a district council member of the Southern Illinois Builders Association. He had been an umpire for the Clinton County baseball league for many years. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II. Mr. Knies also was a member of the Breese American Legion, St. Augustine's Church in Breese and Holy Name Society of the church.
Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at St. Augustine's with Rev. Steven Poole officiating and burial in St. Augustine-St. Dominic's cemetery in Breese.
