Captain Moses N. Twiss, died at his residence in Trenton, in this county, last Friday afternoon, of diptheria. The Captain was one of the oldest residents of the county, and his death will be regretted by his many friends and acquaintances. He was one of the first to enlist in the late war, and at Belmont, while acting as regimental wagonmaster of the 30th Illinois infantry, was captured by the rebels, and held a prisoner about eighteen months. Upon being exchanged, and rejoining his regiment then lying at Young's Point, he at once volunteered his services to carry a transport past the batteries of Vicksburg. He was appointed to the command of the "Moderator" by General Grant, and with a crew of his own selection, made the dangerous passage. His boat was struck twenty-three times, one of which passed through the steam drum, disabled the vessel, and she floated with the current into safe waters below the batteries, with a loss of but one man. This running the gauntlet at Vicksburg required steady nerves and brave hearts, and the actors deserve to have their names recorded high upon the roll of heroes. Such a man was Capt. Twiss, brave and generous he made friends with whomsoever he came in contact.
