Martha Varel, 87

The funeral of Mrs. Martha Varel, 87, of Bartelso, was held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Cecilia's Church in Bartelso. Rev. Ted Baumann officiated with burial in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Varel died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese on Monday, Feb. 15th, 1999.

Born in Albers on Nov. 7th, 1911, she was a daughter of William and Margaret Kloeckner Jansen. On April 24th, 1934, in Albers, she married Alois Varel. He died Dec. 28th, 1998.

Survivors include four sons, Louis, Albert, Gerald and Donald Varel, all of Bartelso; six daughters, Mrs. Dolores Henrichs of St. Rose, Mrs. Rita Ratermann, Mrs. Marilyn Kruse and Mrs. Rosemary Richter, all of Breese, Mrs. Lorraine VonderHaar of Carlyle and Mrs.Jane Deerhake of Bartelso; 29 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Ray, Norbert and Ed Jansen of Albers and Vince Jansen of Aviston and four sisters, Sister Estella Heimann of Damiansville, Sister Eulogia Jansen, ASC of Taylorville, Mrs. Clara Schachner of O'Fallon and Mrs. Marie Straeter of St. Rose.

She was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Vender Haar and brothers, Louis, Albert and Leo Jansen.

Mrs. Varel was a member of St. Cecilia's Church in Bartelso and Ladies Sodality of the church and Daughters of Isabella Precious Blood Circle 718.
