Rev. MITZEL Dies At New Baden

Oscar David Mitzel was born near Felton, York co., Pa, February 27, 1855. At the age of sixteen he moved with his parents to a farm near Bethany, Ohio. Two years later he was converted and joined the M. E. Church under the pastorate of Edward M. MCHUGH. From that time on he was affiliated with the church as a local preacher and minister until the time of his death.

August 23, 1886, he was united in marriage with Laura Belle NICHOLS at Newtonville, Ohio. To this union four children were born, Blanche, Arnold, Daniel and Verdin. Daniel preceded his father in death, twenty-four years ago.

Mr. Mitzel’s early married life was spent in Louisville and Madisonville, Ky. In 1908, he moved with his family to New Baden, where he helped to organize the Methodist Sunday school and church, being an active leader there until going to Freeburg, where he accepted a charge in the M. E. Church. While living there, Mrs. Mitzel passed away Jul 5, 1911. He continued in the ministry, serving on various charges of the Centralia district. April 1914, he was married to Anna HOFFMAN of Vandalia, who preceded him to the grave December 18, 1928.

Immediately after her death, Mr. Mitzel’s health began to fail, and he was compelled to give up the work as pastor of the Vernon-Patoka-Arnold Chapel charge. All that medical skill and loving care could do proved of no avail and April 28, 1929, he passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Blanche HERTENSTEIN, having reached the age of sixty-three years, one month and twenty-seven days.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, April 15 at New Baden M. E. church in charge of Dr. C. B. WHITESIDE, superintendent of the Centralia District of the Southern Illinois Conference, assisted by other ministers of the distrct: Rev. B. A. MATTHEWS of Grayville, Rev. W. G. NEET of Bethany, Ohio, Rev. L. A. MAGILL of Greenville, Rev. C. W. MILLER of Shobonier, Rev. E. U. STORY of Belmont, Rev. W. L. RHEINS of Pocohantas, Rev. E. U._____ served as pall bearers. Interment was in the New Baden cemetery.

He leaves to mourn his loss one son, Arnold Mitzell of St Louis; two daughters, Mrs. Blanche Hertenstein, of New Baden and Mrs. Verdin TSCHUDY of East St. Louis; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle CORSUCH of Kyle, Ohio, and Mrs. Sue DONOVAN of York, Pa; and three brothers, Obad of West Carrollton, Ohio; Frank and Riley of Bethany, Ohio, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

Rev. Mitzel was very devoted to his work, laboring zealously as long as his heath permitted, and only submitting then with reluctance and hoping to regain his strength to labor on in his profession. We who so deeply feel his loss, can pay him our highest tribute by shouldering the responsibilities which his passing has left us.
