Smith Apple of Keyesport Dies

Funeral Tuesday

Johnson Smith APPLE, for many years a prominent resident of Keyesport, died at the Soldiers’ Home in Quincy at 10:15 Friday evening of erysipelas. Mrs. Apple was with him when he died and accompanied the remains to Greenville Sunday, thence to Keyesport, where the funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the M. E. church by Rev. R. H. PHILIPS with burial in Duncan cemetery.

Mr. Apple was born September 13, 1843 in Hancock county, Indiana, where he was married fifty-six years ago to Miss DILLE. He is survived by his widow, one son, C. B. Apple of Keyesport and two daughters, Mrs. Ella CARTER of Ainsworth, Ia., who will not be able to come to the funeral and Mrs. Minnie WELBORN of Pueblo, Colo., who is at Keyesport. He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

One brother, R. J. Apple of Tamalco died only two weeks ago and two sisters, Mrs. Caroline EMERY and Mrs. Edvina KESNER died within a few months, making two brothers and two sisters who died within sixteen months.

L. C. Apple of St. Louis, a brother is at Keyesport and a sister, Mrs. Mary Owens of Missouri was unable to come.

Mr. Apple was a member of Company K, 11th Indiana Infantry and was mayor of Keyesport for ten years. He had been in the soldiers’ home at Quincy for a year.
