BARKLEY, South Carolina "Lina" miss

Miss S. Carolina Barkley, aged 88 years, 10 months and 5 days, familiarly known as Lina Barkley, died at 1:30 o'clock a. m. Oct. 16, at her home with Mrs. C. M. Kemper, No. 1311 Temple Place, St. Louis, following illness which extended over a period of 18 months. Her friends will recall her work in the churches, schools, musical circles and civic affairs.

Miss Barkley, a daughter of the late James and Elizabeth Jones Barkley, who were among the pioneer citizens of Carlyle, was born Dec. 10, 1862. She attended the Old Brick School. As the oldest living pupil, she was a member of the association. Her father was the first principal of this school and the first editor of the old Constitution - Union, established 1862 She also taught there in the primary grade and was associated with her father in a private school conducted by him in the rooms on. the third floor of the First National Bank building, and did kindergarten work. She was an accomplished performer and teacher on the piano. The writer recalls

attending a concert in the opera house when she introduced the xylophone as a musical instrument in Carlyle. She affiliated with both the Baptist and Christ churches.

Her natural talent as an artist was outstanding in the community. Her last work as a school teacher was in Monroe, La., where she contracted malaria fever, returned home, and later went to St. Louis, residing there for close to 48 years. Her natural talent as an artist was outstanding and St. Louis provided a better market for her productions of hand painted greeting cards and other designs. For several years she was employed in the art department of the St. Louis Republic, also had desk room in the old Exposition building. Her income was sufficient and she followed her work until her health failed. Those who survive have many of her beautiful art designs, some religious, left as a heritage which will be cherished for many years to come by the recipients. There was no evidence of age in her handwriting or art work up to the last.

The Barkley home, for over 50 years on West Franklin St., is now the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hollenkarmp, Sr. This was the center of musical activities for years, since the father, two sons and a daughter were musicians.

Miss Barkley was preceded in death in addition to her parents, two brothers, Guy C. Barkley and Dr. May Barkley, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Barkley Norcross Fink; also another sister who died in infancy. Those surviving' include ' five nephews, J. B. Norcross, Portland, Me; H. C. Norcross, Carlyle; G. C. Barkley, Jr., Clayton, MO.; Paul Barkley and Hugh James Barkley, Chicago; two nieces, Mrs. Anna Bolme, Newark, N. J.; Miss Elizabeth Barkley, Cicero.

The funeral services were conducted in the Frerker Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 17, by. Rev. Paul Ott. In addition to his sermon he paid a glowing tribute to the true Christian life of Miss Barkley. After the obituary he read her flower adorned design under the heading of "A Prayer of Faith" as her own contribution to the services.

The vocalist at the services was David L. Sharp, a close friend of the family. He sang "Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide With Me" with Mrs. Sharp as accompanist on the piano.

Burial was on the family lot in the Carlyle cemetery next to the grave of her sister. The pallbearers were W. S. Westermann, D. S. Olson, K. H. Morlock, Arthur Beckemeyer, David L. Sharp and Dr. 0. H. Bender.

An interesting note to the life story of Miss Barkley is the reason of her parents for giving her the name South Carolina. They were one of three southern families, close friends, residing in Carlyle during the Civil War. When a daughter was born to one of the families she was named Georgia. The second family named a daughter Florida. So the Barkleys, natives of Kentucky, chose a southern state in naming their daughter.
