Fine Old Lady Passes Away
Vandalia Union, May 3, 1917
Temperance Adeline TURNEY was born in North Carolina, January 30, 1833 and departed this life on the morning of April 25th, 1917, aged 84 years, 2 months and 25 days, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lennie TOWNSEND, of Otego.
She was the fourth child of James and Rebecca WHITLOCK, all of her brothers and sisters having preceded her to the Heavenly home except one brother, W. W. Whitlock.
She moved with her parents to Indiana and then to Illinois when she was about 15 years old and has resided in Fayette county for about 27 years.
She was married to Peter APPLE in the summer of 1861. To this union were born 7 children all of whom have preceded her except three daughters. She also cared for seven stepchildren, some from their childhood days until their marriage. There are four still surviving.
Their home was one of peace and happiness until they had traveled life's journey together for thirty-seven years. Then the Lord called the faithful companion twenty-eight years ago to the Heavenly Home not made with hands.
Her life had been one of much sickness and suffering. She had made her home with her granddaughter, Mrs. John GOCHENOUR of Otego for the last ten years excepting the last five months, when she had been with her daughter, Mrs. Lennie Townsend. She was sick most of the time for the last year. She slipped and fell in September and had not been able to walk a step since. She then was taken with dropsy of the heart which ended her life's work.
She leaves to mourn her departure one brother, W. W. Whitlock and one brother-in-law, J. J. OWENS of Vandalia and three daughters, Mrs. Lennie Townsend of Otego, Mrs. Eva HATCH of Rock Falls, Ill., Mrs. Becca EYMAN of Litchfield, Ill., eighteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren and three step sons and one step daughter of Keyesport, Ill.
Now sleeps our mother sweetly,
Her short career is o'er,
With the God of love
Who reigns above,
She will rest forever more.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. A. Fairchild of St. Elmo at Haley Chapel on Wednesday afternoon. The body was laid to rest in South Hill cemetery to await the Resurrection morn.
