79, Retired Railroad Conductor, Dies Early Tuesday Morning

David Erwin SCOTT, retired conductor of the B & O Railroad's National Limited, died at his home here at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, 17 days before his 80th birthday.

Funeral services will be held at the Frerker Funeral Home here Thursday at 2 p.m. with interment in the Carlyle Cemetery. The Rev. William J. Schweickhart will officiate.

He was born at Beckville, St. Louis County, Mo., Feb 23, 1888, a son of Thomas P. and Lillie May CLABAUGH Scott. After completing O'Fallon high school in 1905, he entered service of the B & O in 1907 and remained in the railroad's employment until his retirement. He was a conductor for 39 years and met some of the nation's leaders and sport celebrities during this long service.

Mr. Scott and Grace N. CALDWELL were married at Washington, Ind., and she survives along with a son, Postmaster Ralph C. Scott, two granddaughters, Mrs. Richard (Mary) DORSCH of Princeton and Janice Kaye Scott of Carlyle; and three sisters, Mrs. Ed CREED, Sr. of O'Fallon, Mrs. Warren Scott of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. James BURNS of Lewiston, Mich. Two brothers preceded him in death.

He was a member of Lodge 204, A. F. & A.M. at Flora and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

Mr. Scott also was a Santa Claus helper here for many years and this was one of the highlights of his retirement. Retailers honored him last fall for this service. He also was an avid gardener.
