Death of Gen. DENNIS.

Gen. Elias S. Dennis, one of the oldest residents of the county, died in this city on Monday, Dec. 16, 1894, at the advanced age of 82 years.

Elias S. Dennis was born in New Berlin, N. Y., on Dec. 4, 1812. He came to Carlyle in 1836 he married Mrs. Mary SLADE, who died January 15, 1873. Two children, Charles, now deceased, and Elias, who resides on a farm south of here, were the result of this union. He afterwards married Mary MCFARLAND, who survives him. In 1842 he was elected to represent Clinton and Washington Counties in the 13th general assembly, and in 1846 was elected state senator to represent Clinton, Washington and Perry Counties. In 1857 he was appointed by President Buchanan United States marshal of Kansas. He returned to Illinois in 1861, and on the breaking out of the rebellion went into the military service as lieutenant-colonel in the 30th Illinois regiment. Commanded his regiment at Fort Donaldson and was afterwards promoted to brigadier general. He commanded the Union forces at Britten's Lane, and for gallant and meritorious conduct was made brevet major general. He was a gallant and distinguished officer.

Immediately after the war he settled on a plantation in Madison Parish, La., immediately opposite Vicksburg, Miss., where he engaged in planting. While there he was elected probate judge and served in that capacity twelve years. He returned to Clinton County in March, 1887, and has since resided with his son on a farm a few miles south of this city until about a month ago, when he moved to town for the winter.

The funeral occurred Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the house and was attended by a large number of friends. The G.A.R. Post No. 525 officiating.
