Delmar G. Bast

Delmar G. "Mike" Bast, 78, of Highland, died Monday, December 8, 2008, at Kindred Care-St. Anthony Care Center, St. Louis.

He was born July 23, 1930, in Marine, the son of Michael and Ida (Feldmeier) Bast. On November 1, 1969, he married Darlene (nee Lanham) Bast and she survives.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge --355 AF & AM, Marine, Unity Chapter, Order of Eastern Star (Past Worthy Patron).

Mr. Bast was born and raised on the family farm west of Marine. He graduated Highland High School in 1948. He served with the US Army with duty in Korea. He returned to help operate the family farm after service. He farmed on his own for many, many years. He also had worked for Alton Box at Highland, Railroad at E. St. Louis, owned and operated D & D Oil Products at Edwardsville for 25 years. He also had worked for Enterprise Leasing. He operated a grain farm west of Marine.

He enjoyed dirt track and Nascar racing, Cardinals Baseball and being with his large family.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene Elliott Bast of Highland; a sister, Bernice Loos of Highland; his children, Michelle L. (Special FriendRich Schwierjohn) Waeckerle of Highland, Michael L. (Sue) Bast of Grantfork, Keith G. (Nancy) Bast of Highland, Brian C. (Dawn) Bast of Highland, Michael D. (Rebecca) Elliott of Highland, William L. (Josie) Elliott of Highland and Donna Sue (Jimmy) Wildhaber of Edwardsville; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceeded in death by his parents and a brother, Wilbur L. "Mike" Bast.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. on Friday, December 12, at the United Church of Christ of Marine, Marine, with Rev. Phillip Kershner, Marine United Church of Christ, Marine, officiating.

Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland handled the arrangements.
