Louis H. Huels

Louis H. Huels, 86 of Carlyle, died at 8:05 p.m. on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at the Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle.

Mr. Huels was born on August 13, 1922, in Carlyle, a son of Paul and Lizzie (Hempen) Huels. He married Betty J. Sudholt on June 3, 1947, in Aviston and she survives in Carlyle.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Huels is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Athmer and husband Dave and Pat Hempen and husband Ken, all of Carlyle; three sons, Ron Huels and wife Geralyn, Jim Huels and wife Linda and Dennis "Woody" Huels and wife Malinda, all of Carlyle; his grandchildren, Todd Huels (Tonya), Angie Von Hatten (Brent), Ben Huels, Jeff Huels, Amy Krause (Ron), Christopher Huels (Lisa), Anthony Huels (Shana), Annie Athmer, Scott Athmer (Heather), Jeremy Huels (Lisa), Tracy Lindsey (Bill), Keith Huels, Shelly Gustafson (fiance Gary Hylsop), Jami Steele (Nick) and Nikki Toennies (Adam); his great grandchildren, Emily Von Hatten, Katy Huels, Maddy Huels, Kylah Krause, Logan Krause, Kolten Huels, Jordan Huels, Blake Huels, Abby Athmer, Joshua Athmer, Gwen Lindsey, Grant Huels, Kaylee Gustafson, Kenny Gustafson, Lexi Steele, Kendra Steele, Drew Toennies, Rae Anne Toennies and Ian Toennies. He is also survived by his step-reat-grandchildren, Jody Gustafson, Logan Harris, Fallon Harris and Rylee Hyslop; three brothers, Carl Huels, Matt Huels and wife Rita and Eddie Joe Huels and wife Nancy; two sisters, Olive Becker and husband Ed and Catherine Von Hatten; and his in-laws, Marie Benhoff, Marvin "Bud" and Rose Sudholt, Dolly Raish, Roland Sudholt, Maxine Hempen and husband Don, Chub Sudholt and special friend Rita Buss and Joe Sudholt and wife Delores.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lizzie Huels; a brother, Paul Huels; a sister, Sr. Joette Huels, P.H.J.C; three brothers-in-law, Adolph Von Hatten, Leonard "Stix" Benhoff and Bob Raish; three sisters-in-law, Florence Sudholt, Helen Huels and Aggie Huels; and his mother and father in law, Leo and Agatha (Buehne) Sudholt.

He was one of eight children. He served his country during World War II in Germany and France as a combat engineer. After returning home from the military, Mr. Huels moved north of Carlyle on a farm where he lived with his wife and five children. After retiring from dairy and grain farming, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, his family and simply enjoyed visiting with people. Mr. Huels was a member of St. Teresa's Church, Carlyle VFW, Carlyle Knights of Columbus, Beckemeyer American Legion Post 1227, and the Clinton County Farm Bureau.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 12, at St. Teresa's Church in Marydale with Fr. George Mauck officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Carlyle.

Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle handled the arrangements.
