Greg B. Hilmes, 78, of Beaver Prairie, died Thursday, September 11, 2008, at his residence.
He was born April 29, 1930, in Germantown, to John and Anna (Kniepmann) Hilmes and they preceded him in death. He married Arlene Von Alst on December 22, 1951, at Fort Riley Kansas and she survives in Beaver Prairie.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his children, Mike (Edna) Hilmes of Breese, Bev (Wayne) Houseman of Carlyle, Marlyn "Moe" Hilmes of Carlyle, Ron (Lori) Hilmes of Jamestown, Barb (Mel) Voss of Aviston, Jackie (Bill) Luebbers of Breese, Linda (Ed) Monken of Carlyle and Sandy (Mike) Hemann of Breese; 20 grandchildren, Kelli (Mitch) Segert, Terry (Chelsey) Pollmann, Tara (Keith) Hamilton, Kristie (Scott) Tebbe, Kim (Brian) Obermark, Pam (Friend Jeremy), Ashley, Melissa Hilmes, Ryan, Kyle Voss, Jessica (friend Brett), Robert, Lauren, Shelley Luebbers, Eddie, Keith, Erick, Brittany Monken, Scott and Lucas Hemann; three step-grandchildren, Tony (Mike) Borgman, Stephanie (Rick) Simer and Jeff (Heather) Houseman; 11 great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great grandson; brother and sisters-in-law Lynn Hilmes of Highland, Alfred Molitor of Germantown, Gerald (Ruth) Von Alst of Belleville, Verna (Bob) Zobrist of Highland, Marge (Jerry) Steinkoenig of Highland and Maritta Ringering of Pocahontas.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence "Boop", Joseph, Clarence "Stix" Hilmes; sisters, Veronica Boeckmann, Frances Molitor and Florence Hilmes; father and mother-in-law, Robert "Bud" and Alvina Von Alst; brothers-in-law, Ollie Molitor, Alvin Boeckmann, Terry Von Alst and Bern Ringering; and a sister-in-law, Henrietta Hilmes.
He owned and operated Hilmes Excavating from 1978 to 1992 and was a farmer prior to his business. He was an avid fisherman and camper and a member of St. Felicitas Church in Beaver Prairie and Breese American Legion Post 252.
A private funeral mass and burial will be held Saturday September 20, at St. Felicitas Church and cemetery in Beaver Prairie.
