Deacon Jerry Stockmann

October 30, 1941 - June 8, 2008

Deacon Jerry Stockmann, 66, of Aviston, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

He was born October 30, 1941 in St. Louis, Mo., son of Edward Anthony and Frieda Ann (Huegen) Stockmann. Following the death of his parents he was raised by Fred and Veronica (Stockmann) Tonnies. He married Julia Markus on June 15, 1963, in Aviston and she survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Edward (Cherrill) Stockmann of Farmington, Lee (Dale) Helfrich of Shawnee, Kan., "Butch" (Mary) Stockmann of Aviston and Jason (Michell) Stockmann of Aviston; 12 grandchildren, Noah Stockmann, Jack Stockmann, John Stockmann, Clint Stockmann, Kate Helfrich, Luke Helfrich, Lara Helfrich, Bridgett Stockmann, Dalton Stockmann, Dillon Stockmann, Kinsey Stockmann and Kylie Stockmann; brothers and sisters, Lorraine (Jerry) Mebruer of St. Louis, Mo., Florence (Vince) Arentsen of Damiansville, Vera Mullen of Shelton, Conn., Elizabeth Dwyer of Bernalillo, N.M., Dan (Myrtle) Tonnies of Albers and Fred Tonnies of Belleville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his adoptive parents; four brothers, Virgil Tonnies, Ralph Tonnies, Paul Tonnies and Wilbert Stockmann; two sisters, Eileen Meyer and Helen Stockmann.

He retired from Union Electric after 40 years of service. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a member of St. Francis Parish in Aviston, where he was a permanent Deacon for 28 years. He was ordained in October, 1980. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 148 in Granite City, and was a Board Member of the Operating Engineers 148 Credit Union in Granite City.

A funeral mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Aviston with Most Reverend Stanley G. Schlarman officiating.

Burial followed at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston.

Hempen Funeral Home in Aviston handled the arrangements.
