Chester Evans

July 16, 1918 -June 26, 2008

Chester Leon Evans, 89, of Belleville, died Thursday, June 26, 2008, at the Grange Nursing Home in Mascoutah.

He was born on July 16, 1918, to Owen Wilson and Catherine Ellen, nee Kennedy, Evens, in Quitman, Mississippi.

Chester was a United States Army Veteran that served in WWII during 1944-1946 where he received a Good Conduct Medal and a WWII Victory Medal. He played baseball while in the army and continued with semi-pro baseball after his discharge. Baseball was a constant passion his entire life as he coached and mentored many young players. Chester met his loving wife, Georgia A., nee Nehrt, Evans of Carlyle, and they married on August 30, 1952. Chester was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Elwood, Mississippi; a member of the American Legion Post --58 - Freedom Farm, Illinois State Fox Hunters Association; NAGE-R7-23 Division of Service Employees Union.

One of the special things that Chester was nationally known for was his Walker Fox Hound Blood Line Dogs. He owned and operated Evans Fox Hound Kennel for over 60 years. He competed and won the United States Open Field Trials, the Nationals and All- American as well as many other competitions throughout the country. Throughout the years, Chester coached and mentored baseball in Mascoutah and surrounding areas for many years and enjoyed running his dogs, fishing, hunting, gardening and working with his pecan trees and many other outdoor activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren, Tonya and Chase; four brothers, Leland Evans, Edward Evans, Alvin Evans and Owen Evans; three sisters, Edna Wheeler, Ruby Miller and Eula Parker.

Surviving are his loving wife of 55 years Georgia A., nee Nehrt, Evans of Belleville; a son, Jack C. Evans of Carlyle; four daughters, Mary Kathryn (Pete) McGary of Mississippi, Helen Marie (Carlton) Green of Mississippi., Diane Lynn (Michael) McMahon of Illinois and Cynthia Ellen (Michael) Shaffman of Georgia; grandchildren, Kathy, Bobby, Michael Owen, Lisa, Khris, Donald, Susan, Vickie, Larry, Garrett, Blake, Brittany, Brandy, Derk, Kelsey, Jacee, Talyah, and Shelby; and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Lou (James) Creel of Alabama.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on June 30, 2008, at Lake View Funeral Home with Pastor James Clark officiating.

Interment was held in Carlyle City Cemetery.
