Msgr. Urban B. Kuhl, 84

Msgr. Urban B. Kuhl, 84, of Aviston, formerly of Belleville, died Monday, Aug. 25th, 2003, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese.

He was born Feb. 22nd, 1919, in Aviston, the son of Henry and Louise Strake Kuhl, both of whom are deceased.

Also preceding him in death were five brothers, Frank, George, Edward, Tony and Otto Kuhl; and a sister, Mary Alberternst.

Survivors include three sisters, Laura Wuest of Trenton, and Josephine Molitor and Cecelia Renschen, both of Aviston.

Msgr. Kuhl was the founder and pastor for 40 years of St. Augustine of Canterbury Parish, Belleville. He studied at St. Henry Seminary, Belleville, and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein. He was ordained by Bishop Henry Althoff for the Diocese of Belleville at St. Peter's Cathedral on Feb. 24th, 1945.

His first assignment as assistant at St. Peter's Cathedral lasted until Aug. 18th, 1955, when he was named pastor of St. Augustine's. He was named Honorary Prelate, Monsignor on Feb. 25th, 1976.

During the years, Msgr. has been active in diocesan and civic affairs. He served as both chaplain and dean of the Belleville Deanery; chairman of the area Interfaith Council on Ecumenism; member of the Belleville Area Clergy Association; and member of the board of Althoff Catholic High School.

He served as chaplain for the Boy Scouts of America and received the St. George Medal in 1970. He also served as chaplain of the Catholic Youth Organization, the Catholic War Veterans Butz-Jobe Post 370, and the Daughters of Isabella.

Msgr. Kuhl retired on July 11th, 1995.

Reception of the Body will take place at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29th, followed by visitation until 9 p.m. at St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church in Belleville, where friends may also call from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30th.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Saturday, with Msgr. Bernard Voss, Fr. Andy Knopik, and other priests of the diocese concelebrating.

Also, visitation will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Aviston on Sat., Aug. 30th, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Aviston.
