Jesse F. Knebel, 77

Jesse Fred Knebel, 77, of Pierron died on Wednesday, Jan. 4th, 2006, at his home.

Born on June 29th, 1928, south of Pierron, he was the son of Osmar and Emma Luber Knebel. He married Clara Christine Grapperhaus on Sept. 1st, 1952, at St. Rose Church in St. Rose, and she survives in Pierron.

Survivors also include three sons, Terry M. Knebel of Pierron, Thomas J. Knebel of Breese and James A. Knebel of Edwardsville; three daughters, Susan M. Poletti of Red Bud, Barbara K. Kniepmann of Pocahontas and Carol A. Richter of Highland; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Norbert Knebel, Delmar Knebel and Wilbert "Willie" Knebel, all of Pierron; two sisters, Gladys Tebbe of Breese and Shirley Weis of St. Jacob.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Antoinette Knebel; and three brothers, Orville Knebel, Clifford Knebel and Harvey Knebel.

Born and raised on the family farm south of Pierron in Bond County, he served in the U.S. Navy and returned home and married.

A laborer for Laborers Local 100 at the American Water Company in East St. Louis for 13 years, he also was a journeyman sign painter with Advertisers Displays and Exhibits in St. Louis, Mo., for 10 years. He then went on to operate Knebel Sign Shop in Pierron until retiring and selling the business to his son, Thomas Knebel, in 1984.

From age 13 to 28, he was a catcher and outfielder for the old Millersburg Wolves. For more than 15 years, he had raised Blackneck Sichlan Pheasants and released them into the wild. In one year, he raised more than 3,000 pheasants from eggs.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pierron, Men's Sodality of the church, American Legion/ Lee Iten Post --439, Pierron Improvement Club and the Coyote Hunters Association.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 6th, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Pierron with the Rev. Carlos Bohorquez officiating. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery in Pierron. Visitation was at the Spengel -Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland.
