Beckemeyer resident Ralph W. Wetzel, 78, died Saturday, July 23, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville after a short illness.

He was born in Beaucoup on Feb. 24, 1905, the son of Fred and Minnie Peper Wetzel. He married Grace Bartle on Sept. 1, 1929 in Nashville and they celebrated their golden anniversary in 1979.

Besides his widow others survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Sue Rickhoff of Germantown; one son, Robert Wetzel of Havelock, N.C.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandchild and one brother.

Mr. Wetzel was employed by American Zinc of Beckemeyer from 1925-56 and by the Illinois highway maintenance department from 1961-70. He was a Wade Township Republican precinct committeeman for 15 years.

He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ of Breese, AFL-CIO, St. John’s Consistory of Breese and a retired member of the Beckemeyer Fire Department.

His funeral was held Tuesday, July 26, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Breese. Rev. John Klueter officiated with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation was at the Zieren-Day Funeral Home in Beckemeyer.
