Richard L. Shields of Gorham, father of Jeffrey Shields of Carlyle, died Dec. 2nd in Murphysboro. He was 55 years old.

A son of Lawrence Patrick and Margaret Fannie Leinicke Shields, he was born in Jacob on July 13, 1936. On Sept. 5, 1955, he married Phyllis I. Taylor in Raddle, and she survives.

In addition to his widow, survivors include three sons, Jeffrey of Carlyle, Joseph Shields of Hillsboro and Scott Shields of Gorham; one daughter, Mrs. Cheryl Mueller of Fenton, Mo.; five grandchildren; five brothers, Patrick and Thomas Shields, both of Rockwood, James Shields of Chester, and Kenneth and Michael Shields, both of Belleville and one sister, Ms. Lois Shields of Rockwood.

Mr. Shields was the retired owner of R & H Farm Supply in Jacob. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Raddle and Knight of Columbus Council 6845 in Willisville. He is a former school board member of the Mississippi Valley school board.

His funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5th, at St. Ann’s Church. Burial was in Ava Evergreen cemetery.

Visitation was at the Wilson Funeral Home in Ava.
