Mrs. Mary Kampwerth of Aviston Passes Away

Mrs. Mary Kampwerth, a resident of Aviston, Ill., for the past 10 years, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hy. Schwartz, Thursday, March 10, 1938 at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 10 days. Mrs. Kampwerth became ill about 3 weeks ago but became bedfast only 3 days prior to her death. Death was due to softening of the brain.

Deceased was born in Breese, Ill., September 20, 1859, and was united in marriage to Herman Kampwerth in St. Dominic’s Catholic Church here on April 10, 1883. After their marriage they moved to a farm near St. Rose, where they lived happily together until death called her husband on December 24, 1918. She continued living on the farm with her children until the year 1928 when she removed to Aviston to make her home with her daughter.

Mrs. Kampwerth leaves to mourn three sons, Gerhard of Beckemeyer; George of St. Rose; and Henry of Bartelso; three daughters, Mrs. John Peek of Breese; Mrs. Henry Schwartz of Aviston; and Mrs. Theo. Schrage of St. Rose. A son, William, died November 14, 1928 and a daughter, Mrs. J. Grapperhaus of Highland, on February 22, 1920. She also leaves to mourn forty grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Kampwerth was a devout Catholic, attending church services regularly and was a member of the St. Francis’ Parish of Aviston. She was also a member of the St. Rose Altar Society for 54 years. Deceased was always proud of the fact that two of her grandchildren were Nuns in the Notre Dame Order. Sister M. Leonilda who teaches at the Cathedral in Belleville and Sister M. Phersta at Sancta Maria in Ripa in St. Louis.

Monday morning at 8 o’clock the body in charge of Fred Brefeld, was removed from the home of her daughter to the St. Rose church where burial services were conducted at 9 a.m.by the Pastor, Rev. Quack. She was laid to rest in the St. Rose Cemetery.

Pallbearers were six grandchildren, namely: Herman and Alvin Pingsterhaus, August and Gerhard Peek, and Herman and Urban Kampwerth.

Through the courtesy of Radio Station WTMV of East St. Louis, word of the death of Mrs. Kampwerth was broadcasted daily until the morning of burial.
