Ferdinand Ratermann Passes Away Sunday Morning at Age of 42
Death struck in one of our farm homes Saturday night and took with it a loved 42 year-old husband and father of seven children, ranging in ages of 2 years of 15 years.
This saddened family is that of Ferdinand Ratermann, who entered into eternal rest at 10:30 o'clock Saturday night, death coming more or less unexpectedly. For the past two years or more he has been suffering with severe headaches, which was aggravated by uremic poisoning this spring. He entered the local hospital May 7th for an operation from which he seemed to fully recover, and returned to his home two weeks later. On May 28th he again entered the institution for treatment and was permitted to return home last Thursday. With the exception of the past two months he was able to do his work, but even during these two months he was up and around except for several days following the operation. Saturday he had come to this city two times, and apparently felt fairly good but at seven o'clock Saturday evening he began suffering a severe headache, after which time his condition became alarming, and Rev. Holthaus and Dr. Warren were called, who remained with him until his death at 10:30 that night. His death was caused by a tumor of the brain and uremic poisoning.
Mr. Ratermann was born on the Ratermann home place, 2 1/2 miles west of Breese, May 28, 1895, the son of William and Anna (nee Richter) Ratermann. He lived his entire life on this farm, having continued to live on the place with his wife and parents. His father died Nov. 2, 1926, and his mother Aug. 7, 1928. He was married to Miss Veronica Feltrop, in St. Dominic's Church on April 21, 1920. To this union eight children were born; Rita, 9 months old, died Oct. 9, 1934; surviving children are: Margaret 15, Virgil 13, Anna Marie 11, Hildegard 9, Herman 8, William 6 and Hubertus 2 years. He also leaves his wife and five brothers, namely, Fritz Ratermann of East St. Louis, George of northwest of Breese, Ben M. north of Breese; Henry east of Breese and William, northwest of Breese.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning in the St. Dominic's Church, a Dominican High Mass having been celebrated. Priests conducting the Mass were Msgr. Kaup and Rev. Paul Holthaus of the St. Dominic's Church, and Rev. Victor Feltrop and two Dominican Fathers, close friends to him, of Chicago.
Pallbearers were; John Zurliene, John Voss, Ben Peek, Otto Netemeyer, Theo. Huelsmann and Martin Altepeter. Interment was in St. Dominic's Cemetery.
Mr. Ratermann's death was brought deep grief to his family, and other relatives, neighbors and friends. The devoted wife and the seven children were happy with the father, who was so faithful and loving to them, who lived and worked for their happiness, being a good provider as a result of his good management and hard work. The neighbors too take his demise with a feeling of sadness for they have lost a friend who so often showed kindness in helping where he could do good. He was a member of St. Dominic's church in this city his entire life having been present at services regularly.
We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.
