John Otke

John W. Otke, 84, passed away at the Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle at one o'clock Friday afternoon. He had been a resident there the past eight years. Mr. Otke's health had been failing for several months due to cancer.

Deceased was born a half mile northeast of Breese, Jan. 18, 1900, a son of Casimere and Anna (Richter) Otke. He was never married and lived on the home place his entire life except the period when he was in the Healthcare Center. He was engaged in farming, working with his father and brothers, Henry and George, all deceased. A sister, Miss Rose Otke, also preceded him in death.

He will be long remembered for his benevolent acts in the building of the new St. Joseph Hospital as well as the class rooms in the new St. Dominic Parish Center. Mr. Otke donated twenty acres of valuable land a mile north of Breese to provide a site for the new hospital that was completed for occupancy in April 1969. A few years later he donated another 11 1/2 acres near the hospital to provide a home for the Sister of the Holy Cross Order who own and operate the hospital. There were also liberal cash donations made by him.

Mr. Otke was a member of St. Dominic's Church, the Men's Sodality and Clinton County Farm Bureau.

Among relatives who survive are cousins, many in the Breese area. A neighbor of Mr .Otke for 43 years, Leo Jansen, has been very attentive to his close friend and has looked after him in many ways and has helped in his affairs.

The funeral was held from the Moss Funeral Home Monday, services having begun at one o'clock in St. Dominic Church, the pastor, Mgr. John Fellner, officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
