Henry Mayhew was born in 1822 (the area of Bond County, IL that would become Clinton County, IL). He was the son of Daniel Mayhew, Sr. and Elizabeth Curtis. His maternal grandfather was Henry Curtis, Jr., enumerated on the 1820 Bond County, IL census as a Free Person of Color.
