We are looking for volunteers to help translate and transcribe Clinton County Catholic church records. We also need volunteers to proof those transcriptions.

The "Illinois, Diocese of Belleville, Catholic Church Records" were available from the FamilySearch Record Search site but they have since been removed. Nancy will help you locate other sources of these records.

Most of the records are in Latin, but you don't have to know Latin to transcribe the genealogical information. Some of the records are handwritten in sentences; others are in easily read tables. Our coordinator for this project, Nancy Moss has compiled a list of Latin terms commonly found in the church records. You can also refer to this other translating website: Notre Dame Latin Translations

Nancy Moss has also created a series of templates* to use when transcribing the church records:

*These templates are in Microsoft Excel but they can be opened by Open Office Calc (external link), a totally free option. The templates are just a starting point for what you can transcribe.  If you want to add additional information, simply add more columns to the spreadsheet.

The table below shows the list of churches and volunteers currently working on records. If the Transcriber column and/or the Proofreader column is blank, a volunteer is needed!
