This grave yard, previously known as the Nolte Cemetery, was originally located in Irishtown Township. It was in the small portion of land that was annexed to Clement Township in 1888.
The Army Corp of Engineers moved eight "graves" from this cemetery to Section P of the Carlyle City Cemetery during the building of Carlyle Lake in the 1960's. There were no stones, no records and no one was found who knew who was buried here. All eight new graves in Carlyle state they are for "Unknown". The plaque at the Cemetery with these graves reads "Heinzmann Burial Site, 1880-1963."
Although the 1870 and the 1880 census do not show any Heinzmanns in Irishtown or Clement Township, there were several Heinzmanns living and working within just a few miles of this burial site. I have been researching the Heinzmann family in Clinton County for over 16 years and have not found any references to burials at this site, however, looking at the 1892 Plat Map, the family names surrounding this cemetery read like a page of my family book: Stein, Treffert, Davidson, Hughson, Nichols, White. Oswald Heinzmann even owned 40 acres in the next section. The people buried here could be someone from the families of prior land owners, Stadelman, Kramer or Nolte, or railroad employees killed while building the railroad, or Heinzmann infants.
