The editor and proprietor of the Southern Illinois Zeitung, a German newspaper, was born in Braiunlingen, Baden, Germany, November 26, 1842. He came with his father's family to America in 1853, and settled in St. Louis, where he learned the printer's trade in the office of Frederick KLUENDER. He afterwards worked on the different German publications in the city; also worked at the case in Milwaukee, and for four years on the Abend Post, of San Francisco, California. In January, 1874, he came to Carlyle, and worked on the Clinton County Pioneer, a German newspaper, published by John SCHUSTER. In 1876 he started the Southern Illinois Zeitung, of which he is yet the editor and proprietor. He is a member of the Knights of Honor; also of the A. O. U. W. In politics he has always been a republican, - from the time of casting his first ballot to the present. On the 11th of October, 1875, he married Miss Josephine HUBERT, a native of Clinton County, Illinois. She is a member of the Catholic Church. By that marriage there are four children - three sons and one daughter.

Mr. RUF belongs to the enterprising German class of citizens. He is a good newspaper-man, and has supplied his German friends and readers with an excellent family paper. It merits the support extended, and wields a wholesome influence.
