One of the main purposes of "Old" Aviston was to serve the stage coach line that came through on the old State Road. The stage coach station was a regular stop as stage coaches traveled from points east to St. Louis in the mid-1800’s. A traveler by the name of John T. Avis stopped at the Hull Stage Coach Station in "Old" Aviston and liked it so much that he stayed and opened a gunsmith shop. He was the first man to open a business in the area and that is the reason the village of Aviston was named after him. Mr. Avis lived in the town named for him for many years until he moved to St. Louis, Missouri. He never returned to Aviston.
