The present member of the board of supervisors from Looking Glass township, was born in Prussia, Sept. 27, 1827, and was the oldest of five children of Gerhard NETEMEYER and Gertrude HIMMELHAUS. Three of the children are now living, Mr. Netemeyer and two sisters who reside in St. Louis. His mother died when he was nine years old, and he then had his home with an uncle till he came to America. His father came to this country in 1837, and, after living for time in Baltimore, came west and settled in Clinton county. In the year 1846 Mr. Netemeyer’s father sent for him and his two sisters to come to America. They reached Clinton county, where their father then lived, and Mr. Netemeyer was employed on a farm in the vicinity of Germantown. On the 11th of January, 1854, he married Helena BAAHLMANN, who was born in October, 1835, in Hanover, Germany. In 1853 entered eighty acres of land in Shoal creek prairie, which he improved. In 1857 he moved to the present Looking Glass township. He has been an industrious man, and owns a fine farm of 220 acres.

He has had eleven children: Anna R.., now the wife of Henry ARENTSEN; Gerhard L., Maria G., William A., now deceased; Henry H., Anton W., now dead; John A., Catharine M., Joseph T., Helena A. and Louisa. He is a democrat in politics, and has voted the democratic ticket ever since 1848, when he supported Lewis CASS for the presidency. In the spring of 1875 he was elected supervisor from Looking Glass township, and has been a re-elected every term since.
