According to my gg grandfather's civil war record he entered the war in Ashley, IL and was born in Clinton Co., IL. Do you know of anyone who might be interested in doing some research for me (i.e., deed, land or whatever else might be available from that time). He was born around 1838 and after the war married someone in AR. I cannot find any trace of him or his family in the census records around Clinton, Jefferson or Washington Counties. I will be happy to pay whatever is the going rate for such a service in your area.

Linda: I agree with Frankie. Without the name of who you are searching for, we can't help either. It sounds like the family might have moved around quite a bit and therefore that might mean they were never land owners, just renters. That 1840 census might be the next stepping stone. We'll be glad to look, too, if you give us his name and/or anyone else in the family and their birthdate and place of birth (before or after 1840).
